What is Inconel Fasteners?

Inconel fasteners are made up of Inconel, which is a nickel-chromium superalloy that is exceptional when it comes to operation under extreme circumstances. These fasteners have great high-temperature strength, and thus they are able to retain the mechanical properties whilst being subjected to intense heat and pressure. They also offer better oxidation and corrosion resistance and hence they can be used in very harsh chemical and marine conditions.

Due to these properties, Inconel fasteners are extensively applied in aerospace, petrochemical, oil and gas, as well as power generation applications where standard fasteners can not be used. Inconel fasteners at different grades have a range of temperature limits between approximately 600 °C and more than 1000 °C, and can remain reliable in harsh, high-stress conditions over time.

Applications of Inconel Fasteners

  • Aerospace Industry: Inconel fasteners are highly stable and strong even at high temperatures, and that is the reason why they are commonly used in aerospace. They work well in gas turbine components, jet engine exhaust systems, and rocket motor cases where the thermal cycling and the mechanical stress are extremely high. In cases where weight reduction is a major factor, Titanium Fasteners are used as the best option.
  • Oil & Gas: They are also commonly used in oil and gas fields where they are applied as subsea manifolds and wellhead equipment, on high-pressure high temperature (HPHT) wells, and H₂S sour service applications. The most common material used in this industry is Hastelloy fasteners.
  • Chemical Processing: The reason chemical industries use Inconel fasteners is that they are resistant to heat and chemical attack. They are typically used in heat exchangers, reactors, acid processing equipment, as well as in FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) units, where a steady operation and safety are needed.
  • Power Generation: Inconel fasteners have a high thermal strength and durability and are used in nuclear reactors (control rod mechanisms), steam turbines, and high-intensity exhausts, and provide long-term service under constant load.
  • Marine & Offshore: They are highly corrosion-resistant towards saltwater and water vapors, which is required for the marine & offshore industry. That’s why they are frequently used in offshore platforms and seawater cooling. Monel Fasteners and Copper Nickel Fasteners are also the favorites, depending on the conditions of exposure.

Why Choose Inconel Over Other Alloys?

Inconel vs Stainless Steel:

Where high temperature properties are required, which are above 600 °C, then in those environments Inconel fasteners are used rather than stainless steel. Although stainless steel is excellent for general purposes, it is more likely to lose its strength when it is exposed to high temperatures. About oxidation resistance, Inconel is superior, and it does not lose mechanical integrity in extremely hot conditions. Stainless steel fasteners, however, are less expensive and hence can be used in less demanding applications. In the case of the normal industrial requirements, you can check Stainless Steel Fasteners.

Inconel vs Hastelloy:

Hastelloy fasteners are more suitable when working under conditions of high acids and other chemical conditions, particularly when resistance to acids is imperative. On the other hand, Inconel fasteners are highly temperature oxidation-resistant and stable. The decision is made between chemical resistance and high-temperature performance in the application. Hastelloy Fasteners may be recommended in the case of acid-related applications.

Inconel vs Monel:

Monel is widely used in seawater and marine components and is effective under low to moderate temperatures. When high temperature strength and oxidation resistance are needed, then Inconel fasteners are the most suitable choice. In saltwater usage with reduced exposure to heat, the Monel Fasteners are commonly used.

Manufacturing Process of Inconel Fasteners

The manufacturing process to make these Fasteners is very precise, and the information on the manufacturing steps of these fasteners is given below.

  • Raw Material Sourcing: To achieve high-quality Inconel, first, it is sourced from certified mills and has to maintain proper chemistry and traceability.
  • Forging / Hot Working: The raw material is then forged and hot-worked to obtain the necessary strength and the structure of the grain.
  • Machining: Inconel has a tendency to work harder and, thus, care is taken in precision machining.
  • Threading: On design and load requirements, threads are obtained either by thread rolling or thread cutting.
  • Heat Treatment: Mechanical properties are enhanced by solution annealing and precipitation hardening (718 and X-750).
  • Surface Finishing: Passivation and electropolishing are the processes that increase the corrosion resistance of fasteners.
  • Testing: Quality assurance is done through PMI, hardness, tensile testing, and thread gauging of each batch.

Quality Assurance & Testing of Fasteners

All of our fasteners go through quality assurance and testing that ensure that our customers get high-quality products. The methods and testing we used are given below.

  • Material Verification: PMI testing is done to verify the appropriate Inconel grade as well as chemical composition prior to shipment.
  • Dimensional Checks: The individual fasteners are checked by scrutinizing them in order to obtain the necessary size and tolerance.
  • Mechanical Testing: Tensile and hardness tests are conducted in order to test strength and durability.
  • Thread Inspection: GO / NO-GO gauges are used to check threads to make sure the fit and assembly are appropriate.
  • Third-Party Inspection: We also conduct a third-party inspection for unbiased checks that may be obtained on request.
  • Certifications: Every product that we supply comes with Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2).
  • Full Traceability: All fasteners can be traced to their heat and lot number in order to assure quality.

Size Range & Availability

Fasteners come in different ranges, and the availability also depends on their popularity. The different size ranges and availability information are given below.

  • Diameter Range: The fasteners are available in M6 to M64 (metric) and 1/4 to 4 (imperial) to suit a wide range of applications.
