Threaded Rod Weight Chart

A threaded rod weight chart is a table of the weight of continuous threaded round bar (also called all-thread) for metric sizes DIN 975 and UNC/ASTM fractional sizes as a function of length. It is used by procurement engineers, fabricators and freight planners to estimate bill-of-materials weight, compare supplier quotations and order bulk items before they are cut to length in stock. This article includes the metric and UNC weight-per-metre chart from M2 to M48, weight at two of the most popular stock lengths 1 metre and 3 metres, a properly organised imperial length-by-diameter matrix, a weight variance table for every grade of material manufactured by Unifit Fastener and the correct weight formula for any size not mentioned in the table.

What Is Threaded Rod

Threaded rod, also called all-thread, is continuously threaded round bar stock cut to whatever length a job requires, with no defined head or fixed piece length until it leaves the saw. A stud bolt, by contrast, is manufactured to a specific fixed length for a specific flange or joint, typically with a shorter run of thread at each end rather than thread running the full body. DIN 975 covers metric threaded rod sold as continuous stock, while DIN 938 and DIN 939 cover partially threaded studs made to fixed lengths with two nuts. The two products are related but not interchangeable on a drawing.

Weight Per Metre: Metric DIN 975 and UNC Sizes

The table below gives weight per metre for standard metric DIN 975 threaded rod sizes and matching UNC fractional sizes. Figures are independently calculated from cross-sectional area at the thread pitch diameter multiplied by carbon steel density, not sourced from any third-party chart, so every value can be reproduced and checked against the formula in this article.

Threaded rod in these grades is available across our Inconel 625 threaded rods, nickel alloy threaded rod, AISI 4140 threaded rod, ASTM A193 B8 threaded rod and Titanium threaded rod product lines.

How Threaded Rod Weight Is Calculated

Threaded rod weight is derived from the cross-sectional area at the thread's pitch diameter, not the full nominal diameter, multiplied by length and material density:

Weight = (π ÷ 4) × d₂² × L × ρ

Where d₂ is the thread pitch diameter, L is the length, and ρ (rho) is material density. Using the pitch diameter rather than the full nominal diameter accounts for the material removed by the thread form, which a simple diameter-times-length calculation would overstate.

Worked example: M16 threaded rod, carbon steel vs SS316

  • Pitch diameter (d₂) for M16 (coarse thread) = 14.701 mm = 0.014701 m
  • Cross-sectional area = (π ÷ 4) × 0.014701² ≈ 0.0001698 m²
  • Carbon steel (ρ = 7,850 kg/m³): weight per metre = 0.0001698 × 7,850 ≈ 1.333 kg/m
  • SS316 (ρ = 8,000 kg/m³): weight per metre = 0.0001698 × 8,000 ≈ 1.358 kg/m

Both figures match the master chart and material variance table above, and the same formula scales directly to any diameter, length or material not listed by substituting the relevant pitch diameter and density.

Frequently Asked Questions

A metre of M16 carbon steel threaded rod weighs approximately 1.333 kg. In SS316 it weighs approximately 1.358 kg per metre.

Threaded rod is continuous stock cut to any length as needed, covered by DIN 975. A stud bolt is manufactured to a fixed length for a specific joint, typically under DIN 938 or DIN 939, and is not sold by the metre.

It depends on diameter. An M16 carbon steel threaded rod at 3 metres weighs approximately 4.0 kg; see the stock-length table above for other sizes.

No. Stainless steel (SS304/316) is roughly 2 percent denser than carbon steel, while Inconel, Hastelloy and Monel run 6 to 13 percent heavier, and Titanium is about 43 percent lighter. Use the material variance table above rather than the carbon steel base chart for any other grade.
