Stainless Steel 316 / 316L / 316H Fasteners

Where corrosion, chlorides and corrosive chemicals pose a threat to the integrity of a bolted connection, all three of Stainless Steel 316 / 316L / 316H Fasteners are the trusted choice. SS 316 is an austenitic grade containing 2–3% molybdenum, which gives it markedly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than SS 304 (PREN ≈ 24–26 vs ≈ 18–20 for 304), which is what makes it the preferred alloy for marine hardware, offshore platforms, desalination plants, petrochemical units and pharmaceutical process lines. If you are looking for a complete range of 316-series fasteners, including hex bolts, heavy hex bolts, stud bolts, threaded rod, nuts, washers, socket cap screws and custom-machined parts, you can find all these at Unifit Fastener, available in the 316, 316L, 316H and 316Ti sub-grades. Each batch is manufactured from mill certified material, to ASTM A193/A194, DIN, ISO and BS standards, and supplied complete with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. This guide provides the specifications, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, applications and buying answers to confidently specify SS 316 fasteners, whether you're looking for a single ready-stock size or a bulk order of fasteners in a custom thread form.

What Are Stainless Steel 316 Fasteners?

Stainless Steel 316 fasteners are threaded fastening components — bolts, nuts, studs, screws and washers — made from Type 316 austenitic stainless steel (UNS S31600). The grade’s defining feature is the addition of molybdenum on top of the chromium and nickel found in 304, which forms a more stable passive layer and resists chloride attack far better. This makes 316 fasteners the default specification for salt-water, coastal and chemical-exposure applications where ordinary carbon-steel or 304 hardware would corrode.

The 316 family includes four practical sub-grades, each tuned for a specific service condition:

  • SS 316: The standard grade — excellent all-round corrosion resistance and mechanical strength for general marine and chemical use.
  • SS 316L: Low-carbon (≤0.03% C) variant that resists carbide precipitation during welding, ideal for fabricated and welded assemblies.
  • SS 316H: Higher, controlled-carbon grade for enhanced creep and tensile strength at elevated temperatures.
  • SS 316Ti: Titanium-stabilised (DIN 1.4571) grade that protects against intergranular corrosion in the 425–815 °C sensitisation range.

Stainless Steel 316 Fasteners Applications

Because SS 316 combines corrosion resistance with reliable strength, its fasteners are specified across the most demanding industrial sectors:

  • Marine & Offshore: boat fittings, docks, rigging, offshore platforms exposed to salt spray.
  • Oil, Gas & Petrochemical: flange bolting, pipeline supports, refinery structures.
  • Chemical Processing: reactors, heat exchangers, acid and chloride service.
  • Desalination & Water Treatment: RO skids, pumps and structural bolting in brine environments.
  • Pharmaceutical & Food: hygienic, easy-clean equipment and process lines.
  • Power, Nuclear & Aerospace: high-integrity bolting for critical assemblies.
  • Construction & Architecture: façades, railings and coastal structural steelwork.

Rule of thumb: if the fastener will ever see salt, chlorides or aggressive chemicals, specify 316. For dry indoor or food-prep use where cost matters, 304 is usually sufficient.

Manufacturing, Quality & Certifications

Every Unifit Fastener order follows a controlled production and inspection route designed to remove doubt about what you are bolting with:

  • Raw-material verification: PMI and mill-certificate check against the specified UNS grade before machining.
  • Forming: hot forging, cold forging, CNC machining and thread rolling as suited to size and grade.
  • Heat treatment: solution annealing, stress relieving and stabilising for optimum corrosion and mechanical performance.
  • Testing: tensile, hardness, impact, PMI and 100% dimensional inspection; radiography on request.
  • Documentation: EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 mill test certificates, third-party inspection and IBR certification available.

Quality management is aligned to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 (QMS / EMS / OHSAS) practices, giving procurement teams a documented, audit-ready supply chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can SS 316 bolts be used in saltwater or marine environments?

Yes. The 2–3% molybdenum in 316 gives strong resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, making 316 (and 316L) the standard choice for boats, docks, coastal structures and offshore platforms exposed to salt spray.

What is the difference between 316 and 316L fasteners?

316L is the low-carbon version (≤0.03% C versus ≤0.08% for 316). The lower carbon prevents chromium-carbide precipitation during welding, so 316L is preferred for welded or fabricated assemblies where corrosion at the weld zone must be avoided. Mechanically they are very similar, with 316L having a slightly lower minimum yield strength.

What is the maximum temperature for SS 316 fasteners?

SS 316 is rated to about 870 °C in intermittent service and 925 °C in continuous service (avoid sustained use in the 425–860 °C sensitising range). For sustained high-temperature strength, choose 316H; to prevent sensitisation in the 425–815 °C range, choose the titanium-stabilised 316Ti (1.4571).

Which standards do 316 fasteners conform to?

Common specifications include ASTM A193 (B8M bolts), ASTM A194 (8M nuts), ASME SA193, DIN 931/933/934, ISO 4014/4017/4032, plus BS and IS standards. Property class A4-70 / A4-80 covers metric 316 fasteners.

Do you provide test certificates with SS 316 fasteners?

Yes. Every consignment ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates as standard; 3.2 certification and independent third-party inspection are available on request for critical applications.

What sizes and thread types are available?

Standard sizes run from M2 to M110, with custom manufacture up to 6"/M160 and lengths to 2000 mm. Metric coarse/fine, UNC, UNF, BSW and BSF threads are available in rolled or cut form.

Is 316 stainless steel magnetic?

In the annealed condition 316 is essentially non-magnetic. Cold working (such as thread rolling) can induce slight, localised magnetism, but it remains far less magnetic than martensitic or ferritic stainless grades.
