Understanding Washer Weight Calculations & Sizing Bands

Washer weight depends mainly on the washer's dimensions and material density. For procurement, BOM preparation, and freight planning, the nominal size alone is not enough to determine an accurate weight. The outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), thickness, and material grade should be considered together.

Practical Weight Bands by Washer Size

  • Small Sizes (M3 to M10): These washers are generally lightweight and are often purchased in large quantities. Their individual weight is usually measured in fractions of a gram to a few grams, depending on the washer standard and thickness.
  • Medium Sizes (M12 to M30): Washers in this range have greater individual weight, making accurate weight data useful for bulk purchasing, packaging, freight estimation, and BOM calculations. The actual weight varies according to the applicable standard and dimensions.
  • Large Sizes (M36 and above): Larger washers are commonly used in heavy-duty bolted connections. Their weight can reach hundreds of grams or more per piece, depending on OD, ID, thickness, and material.

Theoretical Mathematical Formula

The theoretical weight of a plain annular washer can be estimated by calculating its ring-shaped volume and multiplying it by the material density:

Volume (V) = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × T

Weight (W) = V × ρ

Where:

  • OD = Outer diameter
  • ID = Inner diameter or hole diameter
  • T = Washer thickness
  • ρ = Material density

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a standard M12 washer weigh?

A standard IS 2016 M12 carbon steel washer weighs about 0.627 kg per 100 pieces, or 6.27 g per piece.

Is washer weight identical between carbon steel and stainless steel?

No. Stainless steel washers are slightly heavier because SS 304 and SS 316 have a density of about 8.00 g/cm³, compared with 7.85 g/cm³ for carbon steel.

What is the difference in weight between a plain washer and a spring washer?

Spring washers generally weigh 30% to 60% less than equivalent plain washers because of their different shape and material usage.

How are unit weights presented in these charts?

IS/BS washer charts show weight in kg per 100 pieces, while ASTM F436 imperial charts show weight in kg per piece.

Do you provide mill test certificates with bulk washer shipments?

Yes. Bulk washer orders are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates covering material and relevant product properties.
