Super Duplex stainless steel is used in applications that require very high strength and exceptional corrosion resistance. It is commonly applied in oil and gas pipelines, offshore platforms, desalination plants, chemical processing units, marine equipment, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers. Its excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion makes it ideal for harsh and aggressive environments.
The main difference lies in strength and corrosion resistance. Super Duplex stainless steel contains higher levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen compared to standard Duplex steel, resulting in greater mechanical strength and superior corrosion resistance. Duplex grades such as 2205 are suitable for moderate environments, whereas Super Duplex grades like UNS S32750 and UNS S32760 are designed for severe, high-pressure, and seawater applications.
Super Duplex stainless steel is widely used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, marine and offshore engineering, power generation, desalination plants, and petrochemical industries where high strength and long-term corrosion resistance are critical.
Commonly available Super Duplex stainless steel grades include UNS S32750 and UNS S32760 (also known as 2507). In some applications, Duplex grade S32205 is also used where moderate corrosion resistance and strength are sufficient.
